Doing what you enjoy while you're at work

I have always loved working, whatever job I have been doing but teaching is the one I have enjoyed most. Helping children to achieve and surpass their potential is what makes me tick and nothing can match that light-bulb moment - apologies for the cliche but it's true.

Every day is different

This applies to tutoring as much as it applied to when I was in mainstream school. I work with a range of students from children as young as 5 to adults who want to brush up on their language skills. I might be teaching spelling strategies in one session and an hour later be talking about what led up to the French Revolution (yes, really!).

Connecting with the global community

I got into online tutoring almost by accident and I haven't looked back since. Working with students thousands of miles away has given me an insight into other cultures and how education is viewed outside of the UK. Quite enlightening. This is something I'm working on developing over the next few months.

Doing my bit

As an educator, I feel like I am giving something back to the community in helping to develop well rounded individuals. Teaching is not about handing knowledge to students, it's about helping them to develop problem solving skills which are invaluable in real life.

Learning is for life

I put my hands up - I don't know everything! Having a range of subjects and age groups to teach, I sometimes come across topics where I need to do a bit of homework to be able to teach it effectively. I have no problem with this and if anything I enjoy doing the research. My belief is that being a learner myself makes me a better teacher.
